Poem: Two hearts, One beat

Two hearts one beat

Two hearts one beat
A rhythm so sweet
A feeling so unimaginable to compete

I ask you why? You ask me why not?
Jealous friends tell me he’s got that number one spot

Yeah, I can’t lie its all so true
He’s the one that’s down for me, the one they call my boo

In times of doubt, he made me believe
In times of triumph, he’s there when I achieve

When tears start to flow, he’s the one I can lean on
Two spirits intertwined, its such a phenomenon

It’s beyond words, beyond sound, beyond touch
It’s beyond dreams, it’s just so much

Two hearts one beat
A rhythm so sweet
A feeling so unimaginable to compete

Sometimes I have to tell myself not to smile
So happy, too eager it’s just for a while

Or so I thought, I didn’t think that this would last this long
I prayed to God that he would make this relationship strong

God said, “ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find”
God listened to my prayers, my thoughts combined

I want to share a future with you, a bond so true
Something so unimaginable a person can’t undo

Two hearts one beat
A rhythm so sweet
A feeling so unimaginable to compete

Diary of a Black girl, Diary of a Female…Period!

"Diary of a Black Girl" by Wale

Regardless of ethnicity, black, white, brown, and everything in between, females continually deal with the pain of the past and the complexity of moving forward. Yes, females use the past to guide them in future relationships. Is this always the right solution, you can be the judge. But, when you have been hurt time and time again, it’s hard to trust the next guy who promises to be you’re “everything and more”. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ve heard it all before! What makes you so different?” This is the question that stays in our mind as the next guy approaches us with a smooth line, a comforting personality or a shoulder to cry on. Years of relationships with men with different shades and the same character leave a woman of any color resistant to the idea of the chase. We as women have the bad habit of putting up a wall so that we can never be hurt again. This wall is put up as a defense mechanism the same way a chameleon changes colors to hide from being the next animals prey. Even if it’s not our own experience, we all know someone who’s boyfriend cheated on them or that friend that has gone through numerous heartbreaks that we doubt that she’ll ever give her heart away again.
***Now I can’t claim that I have always given guys a chance when they approach me. But, I can say to my fellow women that by not giving that next guy a chance you could be missing out on someone potentially great for you. So be cautious, but at the same time be open to the idea of someone new trying to pursue you for YOU and nothing more.

Case of the Ex

More often than not both as men and women we close one chapter ready to move on to the next but something or someone gets in the way of that. The “ex”! Just when you thought you were ready to venture out into the dating arena, or perhaps embrace being single and opening your schedule a bit so that you can mingle, an unexpected call or txt (maybe a visit) interrupts your new flow leaving you stunned. What are you to do now when your ex finally realized that he/she misses you and wants to repair what is broken or salvage what’s left of your friendship. This feeling is the worst; it’s one of those instances where you feel as if you’re caught between a rock and a hard place. At this point you’re also questioning whether or not you should have ended your relationship in the first place. The worst part of this is that you are debating whether to go back to what was comfortable or to try something new which is frightening for anyone. And I don’t literally mean frightening, but perhaps you’re ashamed that you fear being alone or potential rejection when you do try to pursue someone new.

***Stop waiting around for some sort of sign or an epiphany to happen! It’s time to close the chapter that was full of good times as well as arguing, unfaithfulness or overall unhappiness. Now, I’m not saying this will be an easy task; it may take a while to muster up the courage to confront the ex and let them know that you’re done with them for good or maybe you want to keep them around as a friend (more friends wouldn’t hurt). But, now is the time to look at the person in the mirror and find out what he/she truly wants out of life, love, and future relationships. Take your time, like grandma says “haste makes waste”, so don’t be hasty but be assertive in your approach to this situation and do things that make you happy.

Suggestions…
·         “Me time” at least once a week do something that you really enjoy whether its treating yourself to a day at the salon, playing video games, going to a sporting event, swimming, going to a concert etc.
·         Going out with a group of friends to a party, club or any other social gathering
·        Changing up your weekly routine
·         Pursing a new hobby or an old one that you’ve put to the side for a while
·         Joining organizations/clubs to surround yourself with a new group of people

***SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE! Smiling and energy is contagious so if you’re in the presence of positivity it will definitely rub off on you.

Chilli's Checklist!

0

"The Checklist"

Since the airing of VH1’s show “What Chilli Wants”, it has been said that women have been exposed. Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas member of TLC ran down her infamous “checklist” of the requirements that the man she seeks must have. Her man must be super fine, love kids, “can’t eat pork, can’t drink, can’t smoke and must be packing.” Is this too much to ask? Is she being picky? Shallow?

Men and women alike, at the college level or otherwise continue to venture off into the dating arena with a prepared list and if the person they encounter does not meet their requirements they head toward the nearest exit. Sound familiar? While some men and women’s checklists are great novels and some are classic fairy tales, many don’t realize that at the end of the day compromise must happen. What qualities mean the most to you and which ones are you willing to forego? Now, I’m not saying find a woman that is a great house wife but lacks in beauty, everyone wants a pleasant sight to wake up to the next day. But does that mean dating the super model that can’t hold an intellectual conversation, who doesn’t cook or clean? And for the woman, does that mean having the man with all the looks, who doesn’t have a car or job?

Are women asking too much? Are guys guilty as well? Let’s see what men and women are looking for…

What she says….

“I want someone who looks at my eyes when he talks to me and someone who thinks I’m funny. As for physique and habits I’ve given up because I always end up with someone who’s the opposite of what I’m looking for…it’s just depressing.”
-Senior, Human Development and Family Studies Major (HDF), 21 yrs old

“I’m simply looking for someone that is God fearing, has a great personality, is caring, supportive, and hardworking”
                                               -Junior, Biology Major, 19

“I’m looking for someone who’s about 5’5, gorgeous smile, loves God, and has a car and a JOB! I also want someone who loves to laugh (time and place appropriate) but at the same time can hold an intelligent conversation.”
-Sophomore, Communications Major, 19 yrs old

“I need someone to be sensitive, honest, courageous, manly, sweet, and understanding. Appearance wise I think girls are very picky because most are looking for a guy with that perfect body. I think personality wise guys are very picky about what are the qualities they want in a woman.”

-Senior, Human Development and Family Studies Major (HDF), 22

What he says…

“I love someone with a great personality, sense of humor, has aspirations, intelligence and style. I think women happen to be very picky because they base everything off of previous relationships more than most men do. I believe some people use this list to an advantage more than a crippling handicap. You can use the list not only to restrict yourself from being involved with those bad people but also to use it to discover the traits of a good person. The list has helped me because I know who I need to surround myself with and who not to waste my time with.”
-Senior, Political Science, 21 years old

"What is expected is a job so that they can support themselves and intelligence! People don’t want to have someone that is not intelligent enough to have a conversation. Also they have to have talent, knowing if this person has something very unique that makes their personality interesting to the sore eye. It will be a complete bore if your the only cool one in the relationship. No matter what we do, we all have these ridiculous checklists that will never be fulfilled because the right person to have a relationship with has something you don’t look for in a guy or girl. It’s all a mystery that makes the relationship! I really do think we rely on checklists too much that we never see the actual person that is "the one" for us. We are so blind to what society builds from creating images like movies and TV shows that it’s programmed in our minds that we’re suppose to have this type of relationship.”

                                              -Junior, Communications Major, 20

“She has to be open minded. I cannot date someone who is fixated in her ideals/beliefs and is not willing to learn anything new, or to question her beliefs. No fundamental "insert religion here" nor fundamental atheists.  She also has to be passionate about something. I would hope that she would passionately stand up for her ideals, or that she would strife to reach a goal. Knowledge is a big thing for me, and if she had a variety of topics to talk about would be great. It can be philosophy, science, victorian literature, why hello kitty does not have a mouth, or just about her childhood. Knowledge isn't always found in books. Yeah, I'm very picky. Asking for all those things should be illegal. At one point, I only wanted to be with someone who would believe in me, but when I was with someone like that I forgot about believing in myself. That's why I scratched that from the list and from now on I'm the first person that has to believe in myself .”

-Sophomore, English Major/ Spanish Minor, 19

“I’m looking for someone with a great smile, who can carry themselves well, and can hold a conversation. I’m also focusing on if they have structure for what they want in life, but personality is most important. I can see how girls can be viewed as having higher standards than guys, depending on what part the person is in their life determines what they begin to look for in traits and what the person can do for them. Relationships are slowly becoming a thing of the past for our generation.”

–Senior, Double Major: Human Development and Family Studies/ Psychology, 21

" I need someone that's funny, laidback, intelligent, and has high self esteem. Also, I'm looking for someone who has a beautiful smile, who's healthy, curvy, spontaneous, and fearless. Yes...Big Yes, I think girls definitely have higher standards than guys! Women are more emotional than men and they want someone to cuddle, great body, financially stable etc. It's unrealistic!"

                                                                 -Recent Graduate, Engineering Major, 23

***Maybe a mile-long list is necessary in order to find the "one". Perhaps the recipe for love is to look further at what means the most to you and what you really want out of life. So much for having that supermodel to wake up to or having the title as the hot football players girlfriend. Even at the end of Chilli's show, she realized that her checklist was unreasonable and superficial. Is it time to re-evaluate life? A list is not only to check things off but more importantly it is a tool to use to analyze, edit and above all REFLECT! Is it time to close the fairy tale books and magazines and come back to reality?

Dating someone who lives off campus…

More often than not the average college student gets so caught up in the “college bubble”. We barely recognize the outside world. I refer to college as a bubble because it seems as if we are in our own world which seems so different and far removed from anything of the outside world (“the real world”) our non-college bound friends and family consume. When we venture out into the real world we sometimes find ourselves in relationships with those that have sparked our interest in some way or another. Sometimes the college student will get tired of the same old college boys they date and demand something different perhaps a change is in order. The problem with dating someone from the outside is that they just don’t understand the college life style. When it is time for us to study or perhaps go to our organizational meetings, they wonder, why can’t you just visit me? Sometimes the conflict is over the college student’s gf/bf not feeling as if they need to visit, or if they do choose to visit they visit at random times when you’re most likely busy. Many people make these random visits in order to catch their partner cheating…conflict! Whenever there is a long distance relationship there is always the problem of trust because either you as the student fear what your partner is doing in the real world, or your partner fears that you will leave them for someone who lives on campus because either you may have more in common with them or they feel socially/intellectually inadequate.

***In order to come up with effective solutions it is our responsibility to communicate, communicate, communicate and find some sort of system in which there is a balance of visiting and a mutual sense of trust.

Poem: What a woman wants...

*****The poem is called “One” because regardless of what your situation is everyone is searching for Mr. Right that extra special person that can be the other half of their puzzle.                                                                      One

       All I need is one...
One person to change my perception of the human male
An exquisite individual that comprehends that my body is not for sale
He who is not fake, fony or leaves me with dispair
That inspirational one that makes me want to become a better person, but yet does not dwell on the aspects of my repair
I describe this true human, that is the other half
The one that can compromise, argue and even laugh
He that recognizes that I am a woman in which he does not need to speak on my behalf
One person to understand the meaning of honesty
A being that acknowledges his God given gifts with a taste of modesty
He who does not succumb to the opinions of this society
That incredible character that expresses the power of forgiveness and loyalty
One person that can fathom that I am like a hidden treasure full of complexity and worth the trip to endure
He who accepts his Lord and Savior as the one who blessed him with the one that he was searching for
The soul that takes each day as a new opportunity to get to know the one he does adore
My long lost everything that I’m waiting to explore...
